OSBs (One Step Beyond)
making powerful leaders
Two Sentinels offers an exciting leadership opportunity in the form of the One Step Beyond unit (OSBs). All OSBs attend Session 1, where they are taught leadership basics like problem solving, dealing with common camper issues, conflict resolution, teaching camp songs and games, how to effectively lead hikes and daytime activities, and even child development and skills necessary when dealing with special camp populations. In addition, the young women spend time working with different units and in ad-staff positions, getting hands-on experience at being camp staff and leaders.
It’s not all work though; since OSBs are still campers during Session 1, they get to experience the rest of camp as a unit, too! OSBs play at the waterfront, go on hikes, and immerse themselves fully in the natural beauty of the camp. They get to enjoy all the all-camp activities, and it is not uncommon for them to volunteer to help with song leading and other fun program duties.
Upon successful completion of Session 1 training, OSBs must complete a week of volunteer staffing under supervision. Often, the 2nd week of volunteer staffing is completed during 2nd session of the same summer. In their volunteer staffing week, OSBs put their training to the test.
Many campers who have attended Two Sentinels in the past look forward to becoming an OSB someday; indeed, the success of this program is shown by the number of staff currently working at Two Sentinels who went through the program themselves.
This is a valuable transition unit that teaches so much more than just how to work with campers. OSBs learn about their own leadership styles, strengths, and interests, and the ideas and techniques imparted here have a great deal of “real world” application.
OSBs who successfully complete the program are eligible for college recommendation letters and high school community service of up to 220 hours. This is a highly impacted, unparalleled program, and as such, only the top candidates will be accepted. After registration, you will be sent a packet to complete; all applicants who are NOT accepted into the OSB program will be given the opportunity to register for Pioneers or another unit of her choice, and will be given preferential consideration. Applicants who will be 16 years old in the summer of 2018 are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to register for Pioneers instead.
