A Backpack That Fits
Backpacks are very individual. They don’t need to be expensive, but they do need to be comfortable and PROPERLY FITTED.
External vs. Internal Pack
External frame packs are sometimes preferred for beginning backpackers who are unsure about how often they will use the pack. But external frame packs can be difficult to find and not as comfortable as internal frame packs. A properly fitted internal frame pack will make your experience a more enjoyable one.
If you are going to borrow a pack, please have it fitted to you in town by someone who knows what they’re doing. If you are buying or renting, have the store fit the pack before leaving. After you get home, load the pack up with 25 pounds and practice by carrying it 2-3 miles. If it seems heavy, that’s OK. If it hurts, something is wrong and it needs to be adjusted!
Where to Buy
While their prices may not be the lowest in town, the fitters at REI are superb and they do have some tremendous clearance sales several times a year. Keep an open mind when you arrive, as they will know what size/style will fit you best, and they do not work on commission so you will not be sold more pack than you need. Plus, if the pack doesn’t work after your test walk, REI accepts returns/exchanges.
