MEADOWLARKSa taste of backpacking lifeMeadowlarks is a unit designed to introduce young campers to backpacking. In the middle of a week full of all the normal camp activities, the unit goes on a day hike outfitted with backpacks, backpacking food, and group equipment to get a real taste of trail life.
The unit is staffed by experienced counselors and backpackers, and is often mentored by a buddy unit of older backpackers. With plenty of opportunities to watch, learn, and have questions answered, Meadowlarks have a chance to explore new skills in a fun, safe, exciting environment. The unit cooks a backpacking dinner for lunch, then after an afternoon of exploring, they head back in to camp, eating the trail lunch for dinner! This switch gives the unit a more relaxed opportunity to cook with backpacking stoves for the first time, and it gives the Meadowlarks a chance to taste several different types of backpacking food. Above all, the girls get to experience the thrill of working together, setting goals and accomplishing them, and taking risks by doing something brand new; all experiences that will stick with them forever. Not sure you're really ready to go backpacking? Don't let the day hike intimidate you! It's a perfect opportunity to explore a beautiful lake, hang out with some very cool older girls, and try some awesome new things, without having to carry lots of sleeping gear! Once you're back in camp again, life returns to normal: crafts, archery, swimming, funyaking, trips to the Beach and the Cove, singing, campfires, and having fun! |
