ROVERS

the experience of a lifetime

The Rovers unit is an intermediate backpacking unit aimed at girls with little to moderate overnight backpacking experience (backpacking experience is helpful, but NOT REQUIRED). Girls build on existing basic backpacking skills, including bear bagging, outdoor cooking, water purification, and orienteering (reading a topographical map, using a compass, and finding your way).  Rovers is the perfect next step after Wanderers!

Girls in this unit are given the opportunity to practice trail skills independently and take on leadership roles. Girls are given instruction in backpacking skills and techniques by experienced backpacking staff in preparation for their hike, so they are ready for action come trail day.

The trail route is more strenuous than that of Wanderers, but mileage and difficulty level are chosen to provide a rewarding trail experience. On the trail, campers make friends, sleep under the stars, write trail songs, and create lifelong memories.  More important, Rovers return to camp transformed by their experience; they return proud, strong, confident, energized (and yes, very LOUD) young women!

As a backpacking-intense unit, there is not much time in camp, but they make the most of it! It is the perfect unit for the energetic camper: girls in this unit have the opportunity to experience rugged wilderness in a fun, interactive, and safe environment, where learning, leadership and exploration are encouraged. While in camp, they stuff their days full of canoeing, archery, crafts, and as many all-camp activities as possible.  Don't be surprised if your Rover comes home more confident and sure of herself and her abilities than you thought possible!

Special Dietary Needs: For the safety of other campers with food allergies, we are unable to accommodate vegan, celiac, nut-free diets, or severe allergies on backpacking trips. We can accommodate vegetarians.

Age: 8th-11th Grades
On Trail: 4 days/3 nights
Min Weight: 85 lbs

Trivia

The unit house on Rover Rock was crushed by snow in 1947 and rebuilt; it was crushed again in 1983 and replaced with a specially-built platform tent, which includes a terrific balcony and preserves the amazing view that has been the privilege of Rovers for generations!
