Top-Notch Staff

We are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated, energetic, reliable and responsible volunteers willing to get dirty, attend trainings, and have the most memorable summer ever! We are unlike any other camp you may have attended. We provide the programming and 100% of the supplies so you can focus on engaging and inspiring girls and young women.

Our staff is just like you! Counselors range in age from 18 to 70+, in occupations from student to teacher to law enforcement officer to restaurant owner; from mothers to former campers to former directors; from nurses to professors to astrophysicists to botanists; and they are all enthusiastic about making this week great for the girls! Read what our volunteers have to say!

NOTE: Our staffing positions are highly coveted and we do turn away volunteers every year. Returning staff are not guaranteed placement, so if you're new to us, please don't be afraid to apply!

Criteria

  • Must be 19+ years of age or have completed the Two Sentinels OSB program
  • Must love the outdoors
  • Must love working with kids
  • Must love fun!
  • Must attend weekend staff training (see Staff Calendar)
  • Must register for camp (see Staff Registration)
  • Must be able to complete an entire session of camp

Benefits of Being Staff

  • Early registration for you and your kids.
  • Special staff appreciation gift.
  • We watch your kids for you while you staff during the week!
  • Boys ages 6-12 and girls age 6-going into grade 4 can be in our Tagalong unit.
  • Mandatory training weekend includes food, lodging, knowledge, and fun!

Camp Names
Every counselor and staff member chooses a camp name to use. This allows us to forget about our usual worries and cares and take on a fresh camp outlook! It also helps the campers relate to the staff, as the names are friendlier and often easier to remember than regular names. It also provides a happy medium of respect between the more formal Miss or Mrs. and first names.

Examples: Snuffles, Peppermint Patty, Books, Dilbert

Ratios
The average staff to camper ratio is 1:3. Units contain anywhere from 5-20 campers so we have at least 2 staff in each unit. We mix experienced staff with new staff.

Training

All the staff here at Two Sentinels have been rigorously trained to the American Camping Association and Girl Scouts of Northern CA standards. They are well-instructed in:
  • conflict resolution
  • leadership
  • camp policy, safety, and risk management
  • child development
  • the camper-counselor relationship
  • camp and wilderness skills and safety

Certifications

Running camp requires some volunteers with extra certifications to ensure the safety of our campers:
  • Backpacking Units: All have a certified Wilderness First Aider or Wilderness First Responder on staff (many in-camp units do as well). Also have a certified lifeguard.
  • Kitchen: Requires Food Handler certification, Serv-Safe Certification, or National Restaurant Manager Food Safety certification.
  • All other units: Have a lifeguard with the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguard certification and Open Water module certification, and/or Water Safety Instructor certification.
We reimburse half of certification course fees for our volunteer staff and often the courses are taught by our own staff themselves.

For upcoming Two Sentinels certification dates, see the Staff Calendar.
